Winemaker Notes
This is a powerful, full-bodied wine with great balance and dense, well-integrated tannins that give length and strength to the finish. The aroma is a wonderful blend of vanilla, mocha, blackberry, chocolate and various spices. The flavors suggest ripe black fruit, cassis, coffee bean, cocoa and toasted oak.
Production
The 2001 season started relatively early due to a warm spring, and we had a lighter-than-average crop. A combination of frost at bud-break and high temperatures at bloom contributed to the low crop levels. The overall quality for the 2001 vintage is excellent. Mild summer temperatures lengthened the growing season, allowing a nice, steady pace for harvest and crush.
