In 1975, legendary vintner and pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high on the majestic slopes of Mt. Harlan in the Gabilan Mountains of California’s Central Coast. In these low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool climate, he began planting estate vineyards that are now recognized as some of the New World’s most treasured vineyard sites. We crafted our Viognier Doux in homage to the brilliant, frozen-on-the-vine Icewines that have been produced for centuries from the coldest vineyard sites in the Northern Hemisphere.

Wine Profile

Production Notes
Varietal Composition: 100% Viognier
Winemaker Notes
This sumptuous dessert wine offers a heady bouquet of orange marmalade, apricot jam and ginger. On the palate it is lush and exotic, with succulent layers of peach, ripe pear and honeysuckle framed by impeccably balanced residual sugar and acidity that carry this stately wine to a bright, lively finish.
Production
The season began with one of the wettest winters in memory, followed by a warm spring that led to a well-timed bud break. The warm, sunny weather continued throughout summer, providing ideal growing conditions. After a significant Labor Day heat spike led us to harvest a few of our earlier-ripening sites, a perfectly timed cooldown in late summer and early fall provided additional hangtime for the rest of the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness. While overall yields were down slightly in 2017, the quality is excellent.
